Francis is the director of Environmental Services (EVS), overseeing EVS contract management, housekeeping, and the call centre for BC Children's Hospital and BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre (C&W), BC Cancer - Vancouver and affiliated sites.
"Francis is the embodiment of putting people first," says colleagues who nominated him for the award. "He brings a calm and solution-oriented approach to every challenge and demonstrates professionalism, patience, and genuine care for his team of over 300 members."
Francis believes the most meaningful part of his job is making genuine connections with his staff.
"My team is my number one priority. I want to ensure a supportive work environment where everyone feels valued and that they have what they need to improve the overall quality, safety and experience for our patients, families, staff and visitors," says Francis.
In less than/under two years with PHSA, Francis' leadership has fostered significant operational improvements, including the implementation of a new recycle stream for used personal protective equipment (PPE) at C&W.
The pilot program initially began collecting single-use masks, but later expanded to include gowns, gloves, shoe covers and more. The project was overwhelmingly successful and greatly increased C&W's diversion rates, helping to keep recyclable items out of landfills. And PPE is only the beginning – Francis is dedicated to spearheading further green initiatives to support PHSA's North Star goal of planetary health.
