Health care data: collection, analysis and application at PHSA

To support medical staff in building confidence with health care data, PHSA has partnered with the University of British Columbia (UBC) to develop two online, on-demand courses. Each course is 60–80 minutes in length and accredited by UBC and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

This program consists of 2 courses:
  • Course 1: Fundamentals of Understanding Health Care Data Use
  • Course 2: Fundamentals of Understanding Health Care Data Analysis, Visualization and Effective Communication
The courses introduce the essentials of working with health care data: how to interpret it, apply analytics and communicate findings through clear, impactful visualizations. Designed to be practical and accessible, they help medical staff integrate data into everyday practice, evaluate outcomes and improve performance.

Enrollment is through UBC’s Department of Medicine portal.

Dentists

Dentists and specialists licensed or certified to practice in BC with the BC College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP) are required to maintain a minimum number of hours of mandatory continuing education (CE) for annual renewal of registration. The goal of CE is to promote practice improvement and professional growth. In this manner BCCOHP ensures that registered dentists/specialists are committed to life-long learning, and maintain competency throughout their careers.

CE requirements at a glance

BCCOHP established CE requirements for registered dentists and certified specialists as part of the Quality Assurance Program. The details of CE requirements at a high-level are outlined below:

  • Dentists/specialists must obtain a 90 credits during a 3-year cycle. Each new year begins on January 1 of the calendar year after the year of registration with BCCOHP.

  • Specialists must earn a minimum of 50% of the total 90-credit requirement through programs pertaining to the speciality in which the specialist is certified.

  • 1 CE cycle = 3 years

  • 1 hour of CE session (lecture, instruction or participation) counts as 1 credit.

NOTE: BCCOHP may request you to provide documentary evidence of CE requirements completion and therefore, it is your responsibility to maintain evidence.

How can I meet the requirements?

It is your individual responsibility to complete the CE requirements to maintain and enhance their competence to practice. There are a variety of avenues for you to earn CE credits. BCCOHP regularly holds CE events for its registrants throughout the province of BC.

You can also earn CE credits anywhere at the luxury of your time.

Please refer to BCCOHP online courses.

Learn more about CE categories, learning modalities and educational activities eligibility on BCCOHP website.

How to submit CE credits?

You are encouraged to submit CE credits as you obtain them. For submission methods and process, please visit continuing education submission on BCCOHP website.

Questions or need assistance?

If you have questions or need assistance with CE credits, educational sessions eligibility or submissions, please contact BCCOHP.

Conflict Resolution Course

In the spring of 2013, it was recognized that PHSA needed to provide their senior Medical Staff Leaders with training on strategies and skills in managing conflict. The intention of the workshop was to provide techniques, strategies, and resources that would assist medical staff leaders in managing difficult situations, conversations, and conflict with skill and confidence. The goal was to reduce stress and improve the overall working relationships among colleagues.

Physician Learning Institute (PLI) Leadership Course

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Physician Leadership Institute’s (PMI), formerly Physician Management Institute (PMI); leadership development is designed and delivered by and for physicians working in Canada’s health care system.

The program is designed to build the skills of future physician leaders, strengthen the capabilities of those already in leadership roles, and foster a culture of continuous quality improvement. It also equips physicians to integrate evidence-based practices into their leadership, develop advocacy skills and address the complex challenges of today’s evolving health care system.
