Advanced Primary Care

Advanced Gender-Affirming Primary Care

These trainings offered via Zoom are aimed at physicians and nurse practitioners looking to provide gender-affirming primary care.

Before attending the training please ensure that you have completed the following free online modules:

Part 1: Care planning for gender-affirming interventions (readiness assessment)

CME Accreditation: 3 Mainpro+ credits

Learning objectives:

  • Use an informed consent, trauma informed approach to care planning for gender-affirming interventions and understand why this is necessary
  • Respectfully inquire about gender and support exploration of gender-affirming goals and options
  • Apply the WPATH criteria
  • Conduct and document treatment planning visits
  • Know where to seek out additional clinical support and resources

Part 2: Gender-affirming hormone therapy

CME Accreditation: 3 Mainpro+ credits

Learning objectives:
  • Participate in informed consent discussions with patients seeking hormone therapy
  • Confirm readiness for hormone therapy from a physical, mental, and psychosocial perspective (either directly or with collateral from other providers)
  • Initiate, titrate, and monitor hormone therapy
  • Manage side effects and other common concerns for patients on hormone therapy
  • Know where to seek out additional clinical support and resources

Part 3: Gender-affirming surgery

CME Accreditation: 3 Mainpro+ credits

  • New dates will be added once confirmed.
Learning objectives:
  • Understand the role of the primary care provider in supporting access to gender-affirming surgery
  • Be aware of the WPATH criteria for upper surgery, gonadectomy and genital reconstruction
  • Know which surgeries are covered by MSP and pathways to surgery for each funded procedure 
  • Describe common gender-affirming procedures including techniques, potential benefits and risks, common complications, aftercare considerations
  • Know where to seek out additional clinical support and resources

Education Request Form

The Trans Care BC team is not available to provide 'Trans 101' in-service trans cultural safety trainings. For these trainings, we recommend one of the following options:

  • Consider one of our foundational online courses.
  • Seek out gender diverse community members, educators, and clinical educators in your region who provide these trainings.
  • If you are not aware of experienced educators in your region, email Trans.Edu@phsa.ca for recommendations.

Trans Care BC provides a limited number of in-service trainings available to the following groups:

  • Primary care teams (physicians, nurse practitioners, and specialists) who can directly increase access to advanced gender-affirming medical care for their clients.
  • Senior leadership teams in governments, health care, and social service agencies that are able to affect system change.

If your service, program, or group fits within one of the categories above, you can request an in-service training by filling out our Education Request Form and submitting it to the email address listed.
