Surgeons

The surgeons profiled here work in collaboration with Trans Care BC to offer publicly funded chest construction (including chest contouring) and breast construction through a central waitlist held by Trans Care BC.

In collaboration with Trans Care BC, the surgeons below work to improve the surgical experience for trans and gender diverse clients. They are trained in chest construction (including chest contouring) and also offer breast construction (or breast augmentation). Dr. Cameron Bowman M.D., FRCSC

  • Location: Vancouver, BC
  • Practicing since: 2004; began offering gender-affirming procedures in 2006

Profile-DrCamBowman-195x300.jpgDr. Bowman is a plastic surgeon certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He completed his medical degree in 1999 at UBC and went on to complete his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery in 2004. He then accepted a fellowship with Professor Stan Monstrey in Belgium, where he undertook sub-specialty training in gender-affirming surgery. He has co-authored several publications in this field and is currently the only fellowship-trained surgeon doing this work in western Canada. He has mentored other surgeons in the field to offer gender-affirming surgeries. Dr. Bowman is currently a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Plastic Surgery at UBC.

Dr. Homan Cheng M.D., FRCSC

  • Practicing since: 2015; began offering gender-affirming procedures in 2017

She completed medical school and a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Toronto. She then completed a fellowship in cleft and craniofacial surgery at Stanford University in California. In 2016, she trained with Dr. Chris Taylor and Dr. Jennifer Robinson to offering gender-affirming chest construction surgeries. Dr. Cheng is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at UBC and holds an affiliate appointment in the Division of Medical Sciences at the University of Victoria.

Dr. Krista Genoway M.D., FRCSC

She completed medical school and a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at UBC. She then completed a fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery with a sub-specialty in gender-affirming surgical care in San Francisco. Dr. Genoway trained with Dr. Cameron Bowman throughout her residency.


Dr. Michael Jacoby, M.D., FRCSC

  • Location: Kamloops, BC
  • Practicing since: 1998; began offering gender-affirming procedures in 2012

Dr. Jacoby is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon based in Kamloops, BC. He completed his medical degree in 1993 at the University of Calgary and went on to complete his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery in 1998. He enjoys a wide spectrum of practice with a special interest in breast surgery and body contouring surgery. He is an active member of the Department of Surgery at Royal Inland Hospital and also performs surgery at Kamloops Surgical Centre.


Dr. Jennifer Robinson, M.D., FRCSC

She completed medical school at McMaster University, going on to do a research fellowship at the University of Ottawa and, subsequently, her residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Western Ontario. She completed a fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. In 2014, she trained with Dr. Cameron Bowman (also profiled on this page). Dr. Robinson is a clinical instructor at UBC, and holds an affiliate appointment at the University of Victoria in the Division of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Chris Taylor, M.D., FRCSC

He completed his residency in plastic surgery at UBC in 1999 and a microsurgery fellowship in San Francisco in 2001. In 2014, he trained with Dr. Cameron Bowman (also profiled on this page). Dr. Taylor is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at UBC and the medical lead for surgery at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria.


Dr. David Williamson, M.D., FRCSC

  • Practicing since: 2000; began offering gender-affirming procedures in 2018

Dr David Williamson is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon based in Kelowna, BC. He completed his medical degree in 1994 at University of Dalhousie and went to complete his residency in plastic surgery in 1999 at the University of British Columbia. He also completed additional fellowship training in hand microsurgery in 2000 at University of Western Ontario. In 2017, he trained with Dr. Hugh McLean, a well-known plastic surgeon based in Toronto who performs gender-affirming chest surgeries.  He enjoys a wide spectrum of practice with a special interest in aesthetic cosmetic surgery, hand wrist microsurgery, and breast reconstruction. He is also the Division Head of Plastic Surgery at Kelowna General Hospital.

Dr. Stanley Valnicek, M.D., FRCSC

  • Location: Kelowna, BC
  • Practicing since: 1991; began offering gender-affirming procedures in 2016.

Dr. Valnicek is a Canadian Royal College certified plastic surgeon based in Kelowna, BC, Canada. He completed his medical degree in 1986 at the University of Saskatchewan, graduating with distinction. He completed his residency in plastic surgery in 1991 and fellowship training in Toronto and Salt Lake City in 1992 and 1993. In 2017, he trained with Dr. Hugh McLean, a well-known plastic surgeon based in Toronto who performs gender-affirming chest surgeries.  Dr. Valnicek has previously served as Division Head for Plastic surgery and provincial Section head for Plastic Surgery.
