Sharmeen Mazaheri is a proud Iranian who immigrated with her parents to Canada at the age of 3 from the UK and is grateful to be a Canadian citizen. She currently lives, works and plays on the unceded territory of the K'ómoks Nation.
Sharmeen acknowledges she operates from a place of privilege as a resourced, non-disabled, cisgender heterosexual ally.
She completed her medical doctorate at Queen's University in 2004 followed by residency in UBC Rural Family Medicine program in 2006 before working in various remote communities until settling on Vancouver Island in 2010.
Starting in 2015, Sharmeen began focusing on gender affirming care and now provides hormone readiness, hormone blocker readiness and surgical readiness assessments. She provides ongoing treatment for gender diverse individuals of all ages throughout BC. In an effort to expand her clinical skills, she has just completed the year-long training in Gabor Mate's trauma-informed counseling approach, Compassionate Inquiry.
Sharmeen works in fee-for-service settings as well as with Foundries in Campbell River and Comox Valley. She is a RACE line consultant and is keen on acting as a preceptor for providers seeking to expand their capacity in gender affirming care. Her clinical mentors include Drs Knudson, Townsend, Metzger and Dahl.
Providers who are supporting Two-Spirit, trans, and gender diverse people are invited to join Dr. Sharmeen Mazaheri on February 3rd Mentorship Call. This Zoom meeting will provide an opportunity for sharing of information and resources, clinical discussion and professional networking.
Trans Care BC’s Clinical Mentorship Call is held every first three Thursdays of the month from 12:10 to 1:00 p.m. (Pacific Time). If you would like to be involved, please email trans.edu@phsa.ca to be included on our distribution list. Meeting minutes will be made available to all members.
