During our current COVID-19 pandemic, there are many extremely difficult decisions that need to be made, and the factors we need to consider are quite different than in the usual course. Instead of focusing on what is best for individual patients as we usually do, we are having to make decisions with a public health lens - meaning that we have to make decisions that are best for the population as a whole.
The PHSA Ethics Service is available to support teams during this pandemic to make tough choices and to provide information about the COVID-19 Ethical Decision-Making Framework of pandemic response to increase understanding of this shift in ethical thinking. We're also here to help address the moral distress that can tend to arise in such challenging circumstances.
