Once you have developed a research question and identified potential funders for your research, you'll need to prepare a proposal.
Your first concern should be to ensure you have enough time to prepare a high quality proposal before the grant deadline. This involves much more than simply providing a description of your research hypothesis and methodology. You will also need to:
- Build your research team, engaging collaborators who can offer special skills and experience to your project;
- Identify the specific requirements of:
- Your faculty, department or unit;
- The university, including the Indirect Costs of Research; and
- The funding agency (requirements may vary among specific programs);
- Determine an action plan and timeline for developing all the components of your proposal, building in enough time to meet the deadlines of both the funder and your own institution;
- Prepare a project budget;
- Write the proposal;
- Obtain letters of support/commitment;
- Prepare CVs and attachments;
- Obtain any necessary institutional signatures. UBC requires submission of a new Research Project Information Form to be submitted with grant applications. The form helps identify funding partners, understand resources required, review budget, and collect Departmental, Faculty, and PHSA research site approval.
