BC Human Rights Code amended to include explicit protection for gender identity, expression

The BC government passed Bill 27, Human Rights Code Amendment Act, 2016, to include “gender identity or expression” among the protected grounds covered by the BC Human Rights Code on July 25, 2016.
BC joins seven provinces and one territory that have already changed their regulations. The federal government also announced in May 2016 that it plans to to outlaw transgender hate speech and discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act and in the Criminal Code.
