We recognize the importance of investing in our young employees to help them learn and grow in their careers at PHSA. Nearly 25% of our workforce is under the age of 35. As an academic health sciences organization, we achieve excellence through knowledge and innovation. We encourage one another to be life-long learners and continuously learn from the experiences of our patients and their families.
As a learning organization, with patient care and the patient “experience” as a primary goal, we want to ensure that we are developing patient-centred leaders at all levels of the organization. Some initiatives that helped us achieve the award for Top Employers for Young People
- Over 6,000 in-house clinical and non-clinical training programs, including more than 1,500 courses available on our online education site, LearningHub. In 2016, our online e-learning courses had a total of 24,162 participants.
- Mentorship opportunities throughout the organization at various levels. We believe that mentorship is a mutually beneficial relationship focused on sharing resources, expertise, values, skills, perspectives and proficiencies.
- Career Planning Services: “Build Your Career… Right Here”: this online tool provides employees with a one-stop internal job application process, an internal career hub to view and/or apply for jobs 24/7, as well as an employee career toolbox covering everything from cover letters to resume templates loaded with interview tips and tools.
- PHSA is a member of the BC Health Leadership Development Collaborative which offers a range of coaching related services to meet employee learning and development needs. The coaching services are offered in three tiers of service: exposure, immersion and mastery.
- Our talent acquisition advisors regularly present at schools, colleges and universities across the province that offer education programs for nursing, allied, paramedic, clerical and corporate students, in order for us to attract young “up and coming” leaders. Clinical nurses and paramedic unit chiefs also attend school visits, onsite interviews and presentations.
- Leaders for Learning – Healthcare Leadership Program, PHSA’s foundational interprofessional leadership program, focuses on strengthening and building relationships and networks to effectively lead staff and influence change to improve quality and create an environment that fosters safe patient care. Two cohorts (25 participants per cohort) are offered annually to emerging and experience leaders from all professions and services across BC Children’s and BC Women’s Hospitals.
