PHSA is dedicated to improving specialized care and the health of British Columbians across the province. The health care system can be challenging, but our staff continue to make great strides, year after year.

Here are a few highlights from 2016:

  • Three PHSA agencies/programs received recognition from Accreditation Canada: BC Centre for Disease Control received the highest possible award from Accreditation Canada, “accredited with exemplary standing.” BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services and Forensic Psychiatric Services received the "accredited with commendation" award. And the Regional Trauma Program, which includes trauma centres in Vancouver Coastal Health, Providence Health Care and PHSA's Trauma Services, became the first in Canada to be awarded "Distinction in Trauma Services.”
  • PHSA and our team members won a record eight awards at the BC Health Care Awards, presented by the Health Employers’ Association of BC, and another six PHSA agencies and/or staff members were recognized at the 2017 Quality Awards, presented by the BC Patient Safety and Quality Council.
  • Our research community continues to serve as a valuable contributor to health care outcomes for patients in BC and beyond. PHSA researchers were awarded nearly $160 million in funding in 2015/16, and the number of researchers increased from 725 in 2014/15 to 770 in 2015/16. We maintained our fifth place rank as one of Canada’s Top Research Hospitals.
  • The BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre Redevelopment Project celebrated its topping off milestone, signifying that the Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC)’s structure is complete from foundation to roof. This past November also marked the one year countdown to the official opening of the TACC and Urgent Care Centre.
  • And finally, our new Patient Experience Council and Workplace Culture Council continued their great work to look at ways to improve the patient journey, and how we can create a more positive environment for all employees, medical staff, contractors and volunteers. Both councils meet monthly, and each is made up of members from all levels of the organization with a variety of backgrounds and skillsets.
