In 2008, BC undertook a survey of inpatients at 78 acute care hospitals to ask for feedback about their experiences with the care and services they received while in hospital. The survey is the second of its kind in BC; the first was conducted in 2005.

The survey was mailed to 34,312 randomly selected medical, surgical, maternity and pediatric inpatients discharged from one of 78 acute care hospitals between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2008. Parents/guardians received surveys for children under the age of 13; youth aged 13-16 received surveys in their own name.

The overall response rate was 53%; PHSA’s response rate was 47.2%. For the province as a whole, 92.1% of respondents said that the quality of their care and services in a BC acute care hospital was “excellent, very good or good”. In 2005, the provincial average was 91.8%.

PHSA-specific survey results confirm that respondents were generally very pleased with the care we provided, In fact, for PHSA, 96.8% said the overall care they received was good, very good or excellent, up from 95.3% in the 2005 survey.
